NATIONAL MUSEUM OF MODERN ART IN ZAGREB - entrance and sales area
As part of the building's renovation after an earthquake, we took on the task of designing the ground floor area, which needed to accommodate a cashier's desk, a museum shop, and a space for visitors to leave their personal belongings.
It was an intriguing architectural challenge for us, considering the constraints of time, square footage, and budget. The goal was to seamlessly integrate new volumes into the space alongside the neoclassical staircase while emphasizing the contemporary nature of the design through material selection and a functional reorganization of the zones.
A clear distinction between the private area for employees and the visitor zone was achieved by positioning cork flooring and relocating the cashier's counter.
Large-scale cork wall coverings in distinctive colors defined the exhibition space for the museum shop.
By juxtaposing materials of different qualities, textures, and visual impressions, we emphasized diverse textures and tactile sensations. We combined metal, cork, matte lacquered MDF panels, and Plexiglas.
In summary, our tasks included:
Authoring the design concept and overseeing its realization
Coordinating work with all contractors
Refurbishing existing floors
Selecting and installing new flooring and wall coverings
Installing new electrical installations and selecting and mounting new lighting fixtures
Furnishing the space
Product design for new furniture
The result is a visually striking and functional space that houses the cashier's desk, a cloakroom counter, bookshelves, display shelves, and a central island for presentation. The newly renovated space is further enhanced by lighting.
